BCG's advice to maximize the potential of GenAI:
Deploy GenAI tools to quickly deliver broad, diffuse productivity gains of 10-20%
Reshape processes and functions with GenAI to deliver 30-50% gains in efficiency and effectiveness
Invent new customer experiences, services & offerings - and build new business models - to attain ambitious revenue goals
BCG's perspective on what distinguishes AI winners:
Winners invest in productivity AND top line growth
Winners are upskilling systematically
Winners are vigilant about cost of use
Winners build strategic relationships
Winners implement responsible AI principles
We facilitated a round table at FutureIT Boston on May 14 2024
Thanks to all who attended - twelve souls, of which:
7 are live with at least one generative AI initiative
1 is planning to implement their first initiative this year
3 are live with three or more generative AI initiatives
The song "it AIn't what you do, it's the way that you do it, and that's what gets results!" was used to theme the discussion.
A question was raised about taxonomy - what is generative AI, what are other forms of AI? (interestingly, a 2024 Gartner survey stated that generative AI has the highest adoption rate of AI categories, at 29%, with machine learning coming in a close second at 28%). We settled on generative AI having the ability to generate new content, based on existing information, and discussed how that can cause hallucinations, with the potential for reputational damage. Some other automation and AI capabilities can appear similar to generative AI, such as pedictive tools and grammarly.
By show of hands, we saw that 7 folks have implemented process efficiencies / labor savings using generative AI, which typically leads to cost savings. 3 have experimented with new business models, with the potential to add top line revenue. We talked about how competitive advantage will come from more innovative use cases, but those are inherently more risky. We discussed the need to balance innovation and ethics, with a discussion around bottom up and top down approaches.
There is no doubt that individual employees are already using gen AI tools, and these may have already entered some workforces, with the inherent risks and lack of policies (similar to bring your own device, which many folks will remember). We talked about the C Suite expectation for gen AI to drive business outcomes.
Reputational damage was discussed, with the example of Samsung's roadmap being inadvertently communicated by an intern, who was then fired.
Some folks from small companies felt they were already behind from an information technology and dats perspective and were struggling to see the value of AI (of note here is trutina's 123 service that provides access to AI expertise on a fractional basis, from as little as one day a month, which could help you get started).
Several folks requested that we continue the dialog. There were additional questions that we ran out of time to explore:
How did you think about the potential impact of AI on humans? (On your customers? Your employees? Society?).
One of the song lyrics is "I thought I was smart but I soon found out
I didn't know what life was all about
But then I learned I must confess
That life is like a game of chess" - As we apply that to AI, how did you approach your implementation? (Did you follow a playbook? Was it more experimental?)What other insights & challenges can you can share?
What would you do differently next time?
